The Campaign La Tournée Rodriguaise 2018, at its 6th edition, was launched this morning at Le Labourdonnais Hotel in Port-Louis. The objective is to promote the tourism and entrepreneurial sector of Rodrigues by showcasing and enhancing the unique assets of the island and to incite Mauritian tourists to discover the island.
The campaign is being held from 29 August to 02 September 2018. It is a joint collaboration of the Chief Commissioner’s Office, Commission for Tourism, the Rodrigues Tourism Office, the Commission for Industrial Development and Air Mauritius Ltd (AML).
In his address at the launching, the Chief Commissioner, Rodrigues Regional Assembly, Mr Serge Clair, highlighted that the Tournée Rodriguaise 2018 aims at increasing the visibility of Rodrigues as a tourist destination, tapping a potential niche market in Mauritius, targeting the senior group and promoting the special holiday package from Mauritius to Rodrigues. The campaign will serve to showcase the island’s unique characteristics including its authenticity, rich culture, gastronomy and welcoming population, he said.
Moreover, Chief Commissioner Clair indicated that authorities in Rodrigues are spearheading several initiatives to boost the tourism sector. The Rodrigues Tourism Office has increased its marketing budget to start new campaigns and strategies which includes competitions and the Best Travel Agency Award, he stated. The Rodrigues Regional Assembly has provided a budget to enhance the tourism sector, he added. To that end, new activities are being proposed namely fishing in traditional pirogue and hikes. Rehabilitation projects of popular tourist sites such as Caverne Patates and Iles aux Coco are also in the pipeline.
Also present, the Programme Manager, Corporate Communications, AML, Mr Prem Sewpaul, stated that Rodrigues’ unique attractiveness lies in its simplicity, culture, authenticity and nature. AML is committed to provide connectivity to and from Rodrigues, he emphasised, adding that the traffic level between Mauritius and Rodrigues stood at 93 078 in 2017/2018 and that it grew at an average rate of 7% between 2015/2016 and 2017/2018. The company, he announced, is currently offering a special holiday package for travelling from Mauritius to Rodrigues.
In addition, Mr Sewpaul pointed out that in its endeavour to improve its services through initiatives such as airline partnerships, fleet modernisation and modernising cabin product, AML has brought forth Rodrigues in its marketing strategies to portray the uniqueness of its Mauritian features. This includes displaying images of the island and playing Rodriguan music on boarding.
A series of activities showcasing Rodrigues authentic culture has been planned for La Tournée Rodriguaise 2018. These activities comprise: road shows, cultural shows, distribution of promotional materials, authentic creole cuisine and sales exhibition of crafts and entrepreneurial products and a Soirée Rodriguaise with traditional creole music and dance.
