The Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and President of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Bihar Branch, Mr Vijay Kumar Choudhary, would be the Chief Guest for the commemoration of 184th Anniversary of the Arrival of Indentured Labourers in Mauritius which will be held on 2 November 2018. He reached Mauritius on Sunday 28th October along with his delegation.
This statement was made during the press conference on 26 October 2018 by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, at the seat of the Ministry in Port Louis. The Chairperson of the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund, Mr Dharam Yash Deo Dhuny, was also present.
The Minister highlighted the different events and celebrations that will be held for the commemoration of the 184th anniversary of the arrival of Indentured Labourers and the Diwali Festival. He added that this year, a bigger dimension will be given to the celebrations related to these national events.
He underscored the importance of the contribution of Indentured Labourers in Mauritius and encouraged the public to visit the Aapravasi Ghat to get acquainted with the history of Indentured Laborers. He informed that the Ministry will sensitise the population, especially the youth through several activities as regards to the arrival of Indentured Labourers.
Programme
Minister Roopun underlined that a roaming exhibition of posters kickstarted on Friday 26 October 2018 at the Municipality of Quatre-Bornes. The exhibition will also be held at regional levels at places such as shopping centers and malls, libraries and Social Centers.
On this occasion, a tribute to the late poet Mr Abhimanyu Unnuth through the recital of the poem “the unknown Immigrant” taken from his novel “Lal Pasina” will be paid. A drama by artists from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute will also be played on the life of Indentured Labourers.
A wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of Dr Idriss Goomany at Pointe Aux Canonniers will be held on 17 November. A play based on the life of Dr Idriss Goomany at the Islamic Cultural Centre will be played on 03 November.
As regards the Diwali festival, Mr Roopun announced that this year, the yearly show organised by the Ministry of Arts and Culture will be held at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre on 05 November as from 19 00 hrs. On this occasion, the famous Indian playback singer, Kanika Kapoor, will be present.
He also announced that regional events will be held on the occasion of Diwali Festival by socio-cultural groups and Municipal and District Councils with the financial support of the Ministry throughout the month of November. They include: cultural shows, food fair exhibitions, fashion shows, Diwali Nights.
