Government is working towards eradicating poverty and improving the quality of life of vulnerable members of the society through an enhanced social housing policy, highlighted the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Mahen Jhugroo, yesterday at the inauguration ceremony of 86 social units of Résidence Azurite at Piton. This initiative of the National Housing Development Company (NHDC) Ltd aims at promoting the well-being of people who are at the lower rung of society.
Minister Jhugroo underscored that Government has undertaken an integrated approach to social housing comprising of adequate amenities and recreational facilities with a view to enhancing the quality of life of these families. He emphasised that newly built housing units under the Smart Residence project of the NHDC have been constructed to enable families to live in dignity and peace.
He recalled that more housing projects are being undertaken in the Northern regions such as Cottage, Petite Julie and Calebasse, amongst others which, according to him, will help foster inclusion and equality among the low income groups. The Budget 2018-2019 makes provision for a sum of Rs 12.7 billion with the objective of enabling low-income families to benefit from these social housing units, he added.
The Minister pointed out that many facilities have been provided on each site of NHDC projects namely green spaces, children playgrounds, pétanque courts, parking spaces, soundproof walls and health tracks. On this score, he emphasised that the NHDC has an established eligibility criteria for the allocation of housing units and encouraged the beneficiaries to take care of their housing units as well as to avail themselves of these facilities.
The Managing Director of the NHDC, Mr Gilles L’Entêté, on his part, pointed out that the NDHC has come up with three plans for the beneficiaries who wish to extend the housing units under certain conditions which are to be strictly adhered to. He also underlined the commitment of the NHDC to continue collaborating with Government in order to help the most vulnerable of society.
