400 households in Kibokoni area benefit from safe water

Over 400 households in the Kibokoni area of Old Town benefit from a freshwater plant funded by Oxfam in collaboration with the County government of Mombasa.

Speaking during the launch of the Sh18 million Solar Power dissemination water Plant in Mombasa County, the Country Director of Oxfam, Justin Morgan, noted that the initiative is aimed at reducing the cost of accessing fresh water for the people of Mombasa.

‘Through this Project, we anticipate to see better health conditions for people of this area as well as cutting down the time in which people have to travel to access fresh water, which will save money for the community since the cost of this water is cheaper compared to the price in other parts of Mombasa,’ said Morgan.

He further commended the community for its effort and cooperation throughout the time of this project, noting that it began in 2020 and is projected to continue.

MCA Old Town Ward, Abdulrahman Hussein, alias ‘Anza Fresh’ highlighted that the project was initiated by a Kibokoni Res
idents Welfare Association before partnering with the County government and Oxfam, and thus at least 2,000 people will benefit from the project Daily.

‘We believe that this is a one-of-a-kind project, and we intend to rip more in the future through such collaboration between the community and the private sector,’ noted Hussein.

County Chief Officer of Water, Natural Resources, and Climate Change Resilience, Albert Keno, cited a big deficit in water supply within the County and hence applauded Oxfam for their unwavering support during the project.

‘This project began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Old Town was on total lockdown; hence, with the desperate situation, we decided to bring water closer to the residents by providing water tanks, and Oxfam further put in effort to provide simpler water services for the People of this area,’ highlighted Keno.

During the launch, the residents got a chance to visit the plant on-site and received directions on how the water dissemination system works.
