The Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Bihar (India) Branch, Mr Vijay Kumar Choudhary, paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the Mauritius National Assembly, Mrs Santi Bai Hanoomanjee, in her office on 29 October 2018 in Port-Louis.

The historical links that unite Mauritius and the State of Bihar, India, as well as the features and methods of operation which are specific to the Parliamentary systems of both Mauritius and Bihar were discussed during the meeting.

Mr Choudhary, accompanied by a high-level parliamentary delegation, is currently on a six-day visit to Mauritius. The delegation comprise: the acting President of the Legislative Council of Bihar; the vice-President of the executive committee of the CPA; three Ministers including the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar in their capacity as members of the CPA’s executive committee; and, five Members of Parliament from the Legislative Assembly of Bihar who are equally members of the CPA’s executive committee.

During the meeting, Mrs Hanoomanjee emphasised that she has always advocated for sustained collaboration between different Parliaments which in turn would allow respective Parliamentarians to grow professionally. She also spoke of the importance of ongoing training for Parliamentarians and highlighted that Mauritius has much to learn from India, a country which is recognised as the largest democracy.

In addition, the members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly were apprised of the signature of a cooperation agreement in 2017 during the visit to Mauritius of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Shrimati Sumitra Mahajan. The agreement has as objective to enable members of the National Assembly of Mauritius to draw inspiration from the Indian Parliamentary practice, which is recognised to be very substantial.
