Koakin: The Association for the Preservation of Biodiversity (ASABIO) has successfully planted 2,000 medicinal plants in the village of Koakin, located in the commune of Pabr©, during the 5th edition of Biodiversity Preservation Day. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the plant cover in Burkina Faso and supplying raw materials for traditional medicine, which complements modern healthcare practices.
According to Burkina Information Agency, ASABIO President Jean Ilboudo emphasized the importance of preserving plant biodiversity, stating that it is crucial for the well-being of humanity. He highlighted that the association’s efforts to regreen Koakin over the past thirty years demonstrate a long-standing commitment to environmental preservation for future generations. Despite ongoing challenges, Ilboudo reassured that the fight to safeguard biodiversity continues.
Laurent Zoma, representing the sponsors, praised the planting initiative, noting the significance of dedicating land to medicinal plants amidst rampant land speculation. He advocated for securing a fence around the site to protect it from animals and other potential threats. The chief of staff for the Minister of the Environment, Ousmane Bawar, commended the local initiative, aligning it with national efforts to promote reforestation and combat desertification. Bawar noted that the involvement of community leaders is key to achieving sustainable environmental goals, as seen in the successful planting of over 5.7 million seedlings through the Patriotic Hour to Green Faso campaign.
