Parents and guardians should control the behaviour and conduct of their children during this year long holidays in order to tame cases of teenage pregnancy and drug abuse.
Nandi Central Deputy County Commissioner Alfet Hudulu speaking during Mashujaa celebrations observed that the war against early teenage pregnancy and any other unruly behaviour among school going children won’t succeed if parents don’t take a leading role in shaping their behaviour while at home.
Hudulu advised parents to have programmes where their children will be constructively engaged than staying idle, a situation that can lead to destructive activities or behaviours.
‘We encourage our children when at home, engaged in spiritual religious activities and even participate in teenage mentorship programs aimed at shaping their future lives,’ commissioner Hudulu said when she led a Sub-County Mashujaa celebrations at Arwos Primary School Sports Ground.
According to her, cases of teenage pregnancy and drug substance abuse soars during h
olidays which results to school drop -outs when schools open in January.
The DCC regretted that early exposure to drugs substance, alcohol and sex remain a big threat to school going children and youths.
She opined those parents; behaviour change institutions and the Nandi community at large should be alert all the time to ensure children are guarded against these vices.
Commissioner Hudulu asked children from schools and colleges to assist their parents in performing various tasks while at home.
She however challenged Nandi community to have a serious discussion and see the benefits of encouraging existence of illegal brew and societies with healthy population without disastrous outlawed liquor.
Lately, the DCC revealed about the government approach of engaging the communities on the best approaches to illicit brew which has continued to lives of many people.
‘It is for this reason the government is seriously considering to pay stipends to Nyumba Kumi elders because their contributions towards village
harmony can’t be ignored,’ she said.
She urged the locals to work with Nyumba Kumi in solving some of the village challenges because they are available all the time.
The DCC used the occasion to thank teachers, parents and the entire community of Nandi Central for reporting zero cases of national exam malpractices last year.
‘There was no case of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education cheating in Nandi central, I pray that we maintain the same spirit this year,’ she insisted.
The function was also attended by the Sub-County Security chiefs, heads of departments among other local leaders.
