DPM Obeegadoo inaugurates NSLD social housing units at Résidence Malherbes

Sixty-eight social housing units of the Résidence New Social Living Development Ltd Malherbes, were inaugurated, yesterday, by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo.

The Mayor of the Municipal Council of Curepipe, Mr Samy Chellen; the Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Soobeersingh Dhunoo; and other eminent personalities were present on the occasion.

Beneficiaries of the social housing units received, from the dignitaries, keys of their respective housing units.

In his keynote address, DPM Louis Steven Obeegadoo underlined that the delivery of the Malherbes social housing units is the fifth one, following those made at Olivia, Henrietta, Valetta and Grand Bel-Air. This project forms part of the first phase of the 12, 000 social housing units project, which involves the construction of 8,000 units, he informed.

Mr Obeegadoo indicated that Résidence Malherbes, spanning over an area of seven arpents, consists of a multipurpose h
all, two commercial areas, a Children’s Playground, a jogging track and a pétanque court. The project including other infrastructural development such as road networks and drainage systems, cost Rs 179 million, he underlined.

Furthermore, he reiterated Government’s objective in catering for the housing needs of the most vulnerable section of the population, observing that owing a house forms part of the basic necessities to live in dignity and decent conditions, which are in turn the prerequisites to succeed in all spheres of life.

DPM Obeegadoo remarked that households earning a maximum of

Rs 40, 000 are eligible to this social housing project, and can avail of loan facilities for the repayment of their house which will cost less than Rs 1 million after the subsidy provided by the Government.

On that note, he announced that Phase 2 of the Social Housing Project will cater for the needs of a different category of beneficiaries.

Besides, Mr Obeegadoo recalled that the Government, during its mandate, has s
o far delivered 3,300 housing units and will by November deliver a total of 4,700 units, emphasising that it remains committed to concretising its pledge as regards the social housing project.
