The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo, inaugurated, this evening, the Résidence New Social Living Development Ltd (NSLD) in Camp Levieux. The Résidence, to the tune of some Rs 545 million, comprises 200 housing units and spans over some 10 arpents.
The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo; the Member of Parliament, Mr Ivan Leslie Collendavelloo; representatives of the NSLD; and other personalities were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
In his address, DPM Obeegadoo highlighted that the 200 housing units in Camp Levieux have been constructed in record time. These 60m2 housing units, he observed, were designed so as to provide a decent home to those families who are less well-off.
The DPM underscored that, in addition to facilities comprising green spaces, parking lots, a mini market, drains, a children’s playground, a 400m jogging track, a taxi stand
and a 100m² multipurpose hall, the project includes several innovative features such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy panels and appropriate waste disposal systems.
Furthermore, he indicated that, from November 2019 to date, more than 3,700 houses had been delivered to their respective owners, while some additional 1,000 will be ready by November this year. According to the DPM, Government is aware of the efforts and sacrifices made by Mauritian families to have their own house. As such, he stated, a series of measures were introduced to help families across different income levels achieve homeownership.
Government, he reiterated, will cater for two-thirds of the cost for each housing unit and the beneficiary will provide the remaining amount. He also explained that these houses were designated for families with monthly income below Rs 40,000, with loan repayment terms extending over 30 to 35 years.
DPM Obeegadoo also seized this opportunity to dwell on the series of social measures and infrastructure
projects implemented by Government in recent years so as to enhance the well-being and welfare of the population.
