Ethiopia, Comoros Sign Agreement to Improve Diplomatic Relations

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen had a fruitful discussion with the President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani on bilateral and continental issues.

As part of his tour in four African countries, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke has arrived in Moroni today.

During his discussion with the president of Comoros, Demeke mentioned that the Pretoria Peace Agreement, which was signed on the principle of “African solutions to African problems,” is being fully implemented and explained its current status.

He said that issues related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam should be resolved through the tripartite dialogue between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, and that President Azali, being the current Chairperson of the African Union, has a leading role in realizing that.

The President of the Comoros expressed his satisfaction with the peaceful situation in Ethiopia and mentioned that bilateral cooperation can be strengthened in the fields of agriculture and fish development.

The president said that he will work to resume the tripartite negotiations regarding the Renaissance Dam.

The two sides also called for the security situation in Sudan to be resolved through dialogue.

Demeke also conveyed the message of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to the President of the Comoros.

An agreement was also signed to improve diplomatic relations between the two countries, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke had conducted similar visit to Tanzania on Monday where he met with Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and conveyed the message of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

During the visit, Demeke also had a discussion with the President of Tanzania on bilateral and regional issues.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister is expected to visit Burundi and Uganda, as part of his Africa tour.
