GERD Special Blessing to Countries in Region: Water & Energy Minister


The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a special blessing for shared development among countries in the region, Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa said.

The minister told ENA energy is currently one of the world’s major agenda and the construction of GERD is based not only on national growth but also upon realizing regional development and shared benefits.

Though various nations have used coal, oil, and other energy sources to become rich, their development has adverse effect on the environment and ecology, he added.

Hence, both the developed and developing nations have started prioritizing on using renewable energy with a view to ensuring a sustainable world and protecting ecology.owed with enormous potential for hydro, solar, geothermal and wind energy sources, Ethiopia could make significant contribution to the region and the world at large in this regard and also benefit itself from the resources, the minister noted.

Habtamu emphasized that GERD is instrumental in expediting shared devel
opment and benefits in the region and beyond.

According to him, Ethiopia is working extensively to develop power infrastructure networks and the ongoing effort to utilize its water resources would benefit neighboring countries.

The minister stated that the country has been providing electricity for Sudan, Djibouti, and Kenya, and will work to make energy available to others in the future.

Therefore, the minister underscored that countries in the region and especially neighboring countries must support Ethiopia’s aspiration for shared development and demonstrate their partnership.

The ongoing effort to access the sea is also intended to ensure national interest along with regional cooperation.
