Government is more than determined to bring the best modern road infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology to the citizens and consequently help ease traffic congestion across the country. Improving road infrastructure is also a prerequisite to take the country to the next level of development.
The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement on 30 March 2018 in Phoenix during the kick-start of construction works of grade separated junctions at Pont Fer/Jumbo/Dowlut Roundabouts and the New Pont Fer flyover.
According to the Prime Minister, improving the current road network is of paramount importance for the Government adding that no stone will be left unturned in this endeavor. He expressed his utmost satisfaction regarding the kick-off of the road infrastructure projects which is part of the Road Decongestion Programme. He recalled that this type of infrastructure is a first of its kind in Mauritius and that following completion of the project traffic flow from this part of the island, that is, from Curepipe to Port Louis, will be more fluid especially during peak hours.
Mr Jugnauth dwelt on two major road infrastructure projects which will necessitate an investment of around Rs 5 billion. They are: the grade separated junction at Jumbo/ Phoenix/Dowlut Roundabouts which will also include three flyovers; and the construction of the A1-M1 Link Road and Bridge of a length of 350 m and height of 90 m and also the longest bridge in Mauritius which will alleviate traffic congestion from Coromandel, Beau Bassin and Rose Hill to Port Louis which he added are scheduled for completion by 2020.
He recalled that in 2015 Government implemented the Integrated National Transport Network which comprised of several projects namely: construction of the Grade Separated Junctions at Pont Fer, Jumbo and Valentina Roundabouts; construction of the A1-M1 Link Road and Bridge; construction of A1-A3 Link Road; construction of the fly-over at Deschartres; construction of the flyover at Quay D; and construction of the Ring Road Phases 2 and 3. Concurrently, the Prime Minister added, Government is implementing the Metro Express Project along the corridor Curepipe to Port Louis and reviewing the transportation network at EbAne to modernise the transport sector and reduce traffic congestion.
For his part, the Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha, stated that this infrastructural venture will help transform the road network landscape and build a modern Mauritius to respond to the aspirations of the Nation. He recalled that some Rs 50 billion has been earmarked for projects under the Road Decongestion Programme to be undertaken across the country within the next five years.
