HPR Achieves 2017 Fiscal Year Objectives: Speaker Tagese

Addis ababa: The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) successfully accomplished the objectives set for the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year, Speaker Tagese Chafo stated during the House’s third special session, which focused on reviewing its annual performance report. He highlighted the successful execution of legislative duties and the sustained commitment to institutional accountability.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Speaker Tagese emphasized that every proclamation enacted by the HPR underwent meticulous scrutiny prior to approval, ensuring effective implementation. He also noted that post-approval audits are now being conducted to verify the intended enforcement of enacted laws. The Speaker reiterated that the House’s oversight and monitoring roles were executed following established procedures, with accountability mechanisms actively in place.

Speaker Tagese urged members to build upon the achievements of the previous five-year term while addressing remaining gaps collaboratively. Deputy Speaker Lomi Bedo presented the House of Peoples’ Representatives’ annual performance report, emphasizing its close coordination with relevant institutions to fulfill its legislative mandate. She reported notable progress in executing the four core responsibilities legally assigned to the House and mentioned that proposed laws underwent rigorous scrutiny by legal experts and standing committee members before being passed.

Efforts to promote transparency through public forums and evidence-based deliberations were also highlighted, with over 50 proclamations reviewed and passed during 43 regular and special sessions throughout the fiscal year. These laws addressed wide-ranging public interests and were of significant national relevance. In parliamentary diplomacy, the HPR actively engaged with international parliamentary bodies and visiting delegations, strengthening the country’s global parliamentary relations.

The Deputy Speaker also emphasized the work of the House’s 13 standing committees, which oversee and support the performance of executive bodies. Furthermore, Members of Parliament conducted biannual constituency meetings, enabling them to gather and respond to public concerns in a structured and responsive manner.
