Inauguration of Résidence Grand Bel Air Phase One: 96 beneficiaries receive Keys

The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo proceeded, today, with the inauguration of the Phase One of Résidence Grand Bel Air and remitted keys to 96 beneficiaries for social housing units provided by the New Social Living Development (NSLD).

The Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Mahen Kumar Seeruttun; the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint; the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hureeram; the Chief Government Whip, Mr Rameswar Doolub; Parliamentary Private Secretary, Ms Teenah Jutton; and other personalities were also present for the occasion.

In his keynote address, the Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the aim of this project is to enhance housing accessibility in Grand Bel Air, with a total investment of Rs 540 million. ‘Each home’, he stressed, ‘is designed to be spacious, accommodating families and
providing essential amenities, including facilities for individuals with disabilities.’

Furthermore, he emphasised that Government is dedicated to building a total of 8 000 housing units across various locations, with ongoing construction and delivery scheduled for multiple sites. This initiative is seen as crucial in addressing housing needs, fostering community development, and ensuring that every family has the opportunity to become a homeowner.

Mr Obeegadoo moreover, pointed out that this housing initiative is not just about constructing buildings but it rather aims to foster a sense of community by providing shared spaces and essential facilities. He also announced that the second phase of the project will involve delivering 104 social housing units by October 2024, and the inclusion of the necessary infrastructure to engage in social and leisure activities.

For his part, Minister Toussaint stated that Government’s dedication to development is evident in the comprehensive facilities being integrated i
nto these housing projects. ‘This holistic approach to urban living reflects Government’s vision of creating environments where families can thrive together’, he added.

On the same note, Minister Hureeram indicated that these modern homes have been thoughtfully designed to offer more spacious accommodations, with careful planning ensuring that each unit meets the needs of families.

As for Mr Doolub, he reflected on the importance of housing, stating that a home is more than just a physical structure as it represents a vital need and a foundation for a dignified life. He highlighted Government’s philosophy which focuses on enhancing the quality of life for every citizen, regardless of their financial means.

About the project

The NSLD Résidence Grand Bel Air project includes a 70 m² multipurpose hall, 30 m² commercial space, a children’s playground, a one km jogging track, a petanque court, and landscaped green spaces. Within walking distance, residents will have access to essential facilities such as a foo
tball playground, bus stop, taxi service, places of worship, schools, a kindergarten, retail shops, and a community centre.
