A workshop, focusing on techniques and tools to prepare Mauritian athletes mentally for their performance during the forthcoming Indian Ocean Island Games 2019 (IOIG), was held yesterday at the Wellkin Hospital in Moka. The objective was to help athletes achieve a focused mindset in order to compete at their highest level at the IOIG 2019.
The event, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Wellkin Hospital, also targeted sports trainers involved with the preparation of athletes. The resource person was Mr Mathieu Benoit, who is the coach of French Squash Champion, Mr Gregory Gaultier.
During the workshop, emphasis was on the importance of mental preparation leading to the creation of a mindset that motivates athletes to perform consistently up to the best of their capabilities during the various competitions. Athletes were also given an opportunity to learn strategies to boost their confidence level and perform optimally.
Some of the key issues that athletes should take into consideration are: physical, technical and mental abilities; past performance record; improvement of future performance; and awareness of one’s own performance.
