Farmers of Kirimukuyu ward, Mathira constituency, Nyeri County can afford a smile after area MCA supported them with maize seed to plant during this short rain season.
At a beneficiaries’ gathering at Kaiyaba grounds in Mathira yesterday, Kirimukuyu Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Muriithi Ndagita distributed the maize seeds to over 1500 farmers from 86 organized groups.
He said the seeds distributed take approximately four months to mature, especially considering the recent changes in climate patterns and encouraged farmers to plant immediately when rains start.
The MCA said considering the unpredictable weather conditions, farmers should also plant other crops like beans, vegetables, sweet potatoes among others.
He emphasized the importance of providing farmers with reliable planting materials to enhance food security.
‘I encourage our farmers to come together and work with the County Government of Nyeri in ensuring that we have Food Security not just for us but for future generations,’ said Nda
gita.
Ndagita acknowledged the struggles farmers face in purchasing quality seeds and highlighted concerns about unscrupulous traders exploiting the situation, which has led to a decline in seed quality available in the market. He said to combat these challenges he decided to distribute quality maize seeds to ensure a successful planting season and higher produce.
He expressed gratitude to the residents of Kirimukuyu for their participation and commitment to improving agricultural practices in the region.
