Lord David Neuberger calls on the Prime Minister

Lord David Neuberger, judge and President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom from 2012 to 2017, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, yesterday afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

In a statement, Lord Neuberger indicated that discussions focused on the international arbitration system of Mauritius. He pointed out that Mauritius already has a good arbitration system supported by notable arbitration institutions such as the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Council for Commercial Arbitration.

He further underlined that the country wields various attributes to be a centre for international arbitration. Its geographical location with respect to Africa and Asia as well as its time zone for London are considerable advantages, he said.

Moreover, Lord Neuberger added that the country has the advantage of possessing a strong legal system which is anchored in civil law and combines both the French and English law systems. He also spoke about the multilingual aspect of the country, wherein the mastery of French and English increases the scope for Mauritius to position itself as an international arbitration centre.
