Mr Goinda Cathan, born on 24 September 1924, has joined the league of centenarians as he celebrated, yesterday, his 100th birthday, with his family members at Chemin Grenier.
He received from the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, a cheque amounting to Rs 26,203, a flower bouquet, a centenarian medal along with a certificate and a Philips Shaver.
A present was offered by the Senior Citizens Council as well as a cash gift of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund. He also received a Special Telephone Service from the Mauritius Telecom.
Life history of the new Centenarian
The centenarian’s father, Mr Ramsamy Cathan was a sugarcane labourer at Benares Sugar Estate, while his mother, Mrs Ramsamy Mardaye, was a housewife. They begot only one child; the centenarian.
Mr Goinda Cathan was born at Allée Brillant, then moved to Camp Diable. He has never attended school and eventually worked as an attendant at Souillac Hospital. He got civilly married on 06 June 1955 at t
he age of 30 to Mrs Anamalay Iylandon. The couple had six children, three sons and three daughters. His wife passed away on 09 November 2007.
Mr Cathan attributes his longevity to hard work and to his unconditional faith in God.
