The New Centre for the treatment of cancer, constructed to the tune of Rs 1 billion in Vacoas, will be operational in May 2020, announced, yesterday, the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a new Community Health Centre, constructed to the tune of Rs 38 million, at Tombeau Bay in presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Jagutpal, the Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn and other personalities.
Against the backdrop of the novel Covid-19, the Prime Minister stated that Government is stepping up efforts at the airport and the sea port so as to prevent the Novel Coronavirus from entering the territory of Mauritius.
However, he said, Mauritius remains vulnerable to this pandemic which is affecting several countries around the globe. In the face of the economic impact of the Covid-19, he called on the different governmental departments and Ministries to minimise their expenditures.
The Prime Minister reiterated his vision which is geared towards promoting infrastructural development in all sectors of the economy and enhancing the quality of life of the population. He dwelt on the various projects in the health sector aiming to improving healthcare services in the country.
The projects are: a new eye hospital to the tune of some Rs 700 million; a new laboratory costing around Rs 900 million to conduct medical tests; an e-health project to increase the overall effectiveness of health services costing some Rs 600 million; a University hospital in Flacq amounting to Rs 4 billion; and a new storage building for medicines amounting to some Rs 900 million.
Prime Minister Jugnauth also mentioned the increase in the Overseas Treatment Scheme to patients proceeding abroad from Rs 800,000 to Rs 1 million while adding that the cost of air tickets for a person accompanying the patient will be borne by Government.
He also referred to the construction of mediclinics in Quartier Militaire, Stanley, Bel-Air, Coromandel, Saint Francois Xavier and Roche Bois while recalling that a new mediclinic was inaugurated in January 2020 in Floreal.
For his part, Minister Jagutpal stated that the Community Health Centre equipped with modern healthcare facilities will help to decentralise the services of hospitals while also ensuring more proximity to the citizens.
As for Minister Callichurn, he highlighted that this healthcare facility will provide essential services for the welfare of the locality.
Tombeau Bay Community Health Centre
The Community Centre offers basic health services, general consultations, community-based rehabilitation services, Family planning clinic, dental clinic, and a Non-Communicable Diseases Clinic.
It will operate on a daily basis as from 08 00 to 16 00 hours and on Saturdays, it will be open from 08 00 hours to noon.
