North West mayors say cancellation of 75% of council debts to boost dev’t

Mayors of the North West region have sent a motion of gratitude to President Paul Biya, following the cancellation of over 3 billion FCFA, representing 75% of council debts in the North West region.

During the 16th General Assembly of the United Councils and Cities of Cameroon, UCCC North West chapter, the local authorities committed to use the funds for the execution of new projects in their municipalities.

The event which took place on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, was chaired by Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang who doubles as the Regional president of the UCCC in the North West region.

During the board meeting of FEICOM in August 2024, the decision was taken to cancel the debts due to the armed conflict in the North West and South West regions hindering councils from collecting local revenue.

‘Now that the debts have been canceled, it paves the way for us Mayors and councils of the North West region to mature new projects for funding through FEICOM to meet the aspirations of the people,’ Mayor Ndang said.

During t
he meeting that brought together Mayors of the region, Governor Adolphe Lele L’afrique called on Mayors who have not been responding to the needs of the population to sit up and be agents of grassroots development.

‘I am asking them to make good use of the means put at their disposal and transform them into feasible projects. Next year they’re going to the polls, it’s their interest to give answers to the population to be re-elected,’ the Governor said.

While some councils are not beneficiaries of the gesture made by the Head of State through FEICOM, others have debts amounting to 40 million FCFA which have been canceled.
