Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions holds panel discussion on the fight against drug trafficking and ill-acquired gains

A panel discussion focusing on the theme ‘Our effectiveness in the fight against drug trafficking and ill-acquired gains’, organised by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), was held on 20 September 2024, in Port-Louis.

Various stakeholders engaged in the fight against drug trafficking, including representatives from key institutions such as the Mauritius Police Force (MPF), and Non-Governmental Organisations, discussed the current situation prevailing in Mauritius, brought forth issues they faced in their endeavours, and made recommendations for more effective measures.

During his intervention, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr Abdool Rashid Ahmine, expressed satisfaction as regards the involvement of the different stakeholders in this common fight. Emphasising that drug trafficking is a complex issue which cannot be eradicated completely, the DPP asserted that the target should be to reduce its impacts.

This, he averred, can be achieved through prevention and awareness ca
mpaigns among the youth, rehabilitation of drug victims, and application of the law for drug offenders.

Furthermore, Mr Abdool Rashid Ahmine lauded the commendable work being carried out by the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit of the MPF, highlighting its successful missions leading to the arrest of drug offenders.

The DPP moreover underpinned the crucial need to carry further investigation to go right to the top of the chain to identify the drug barons as well as tackling related issues of money laundering, and ill-acquired assets and properties.

In his closing remarks, the DPP underlined the importance for all concerned stakeholders working to curb the drug scourge, to remain committed to their responsibility and mission, and work for an improved system with increased effectiveness, enhanced trust, and which is in strict compliance with the law.
