The National Assembly Committee on Housing, Urban Planning, and Public Works has commended Kirinyaga County for the speedy implementation of the affordable housing project in Kerugoya Town.
The committee that was on a fact-finding mission observed that, in a record time of less than three months, the ongoing construction of the first 100 units was already ahead of schedule.
Led by the Emurua Dikirr MP, Johanna Ngeno, who is also the Housing Committee chair, the delegation, which included Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Pasarris and Subukia MP Samuel Gachobe, observed that the smooth implementation of the project was a result of the good cooperation by various stakeholders, among them the national and county governments.
‘We have paid visits to various counties, and I commend Kirinyaga, led by Governor Anne Waiguru, for the excellent working relationship that exists between the county and the National Government, and therefore we give the county an over 80 percent rating. We shall continue providing the relevant support to ensure the project runs smoothly,’ Ngeno said.
Subukia MP Samuel Gachobe stated that the progress accomplished in Kirinyaga in such a short period of time was impressive and that the project was well within its implementation timelines.
The first 100 units currently under construction include 20 studio apartments, 40 one-bedroom units, and 40 two-bedroom houses. They are expected to be ready for occupation by June 2024. The entire project is planned to produce 1,000 units.
Kirinyaga Deputy Governor, David Githanda, reiterated the county government’s support and commitment to the success of the project. He said that the county government handed over six acres for the project and assured the county residents that they will be the major beneficiaries of the project.
Apart from providing over 90 per cent of construction labour with the opportunity to provide construction materials, residents will also have the opportunity to own the low-cost houses once they are completed, he noted.
There are plans to undertake similar projects in Sagana, Kianyaga, Wang’uru, and Redsoil in Mwea East.
