Addis Ababa: Participants of the Irreechaa festival in Bishoftu have expressed a strong desire for the event to be recognized by UNESCO as one of the best world heritages, highlighting its unique cultural features and significance.
The annual Irreechaa festival is underway in Bishoftu town of Oromia region decorated by huge participants from across Ethiopia.
It is to be recalled that the Geda system, a traditional socio-political structure of the Oromo people, was inscribed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This recognition highlights the system’s importance in promoting community values, leadership, and cultural identity.
The Geda system emphasizes democratic practices, generational leadership transitions, and the preservation of Oromo culture, making it a vital part of Ethiopia’s rich heritage.
Ewnetu Workneh from Diredawa emphasized the unity, peace, and cooperation celebrated during Irreechaa, noting that such values should be documented as a tangible heritage.

e Dawa, shared his admiration for the traditional clothing worn by the Oromo people, hoping that this cultural expression will attract tourists and benefit local designers.
