SBM sponsors 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games to the tune of Rs 25 million

A sponsorship agreement, in the context of the 10th edition of the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG), was signed yesterday between the Comité d’Organisation des Jeux des Îles (COJI) and State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) Ltd at the headquarters of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Port Louis. The SBM sponsorship, which amounts to a total of Rs 25 million, will be used for the smooth running of the COJI and its 14 Commissions.

The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Stephan Toussaint. Signatories were the Executive Director of the COJI, Mr Jean-Pierre Sauzier, and the SBM Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Andrew Brainbridge.

In his address, Minister Toussaint highlighted that the COJI’s aim is to organise a 5-star IOIG whether it pertains to the preparation, accommodation of athletes and results. In this respect, he stated, the collaboration and contribution of the SBM plays a major role in the preparation of the Games. The preparation of such important events requires the participation of Government, the private sector, stakeholders and the public at large, he pointed out.

The COJI’s Executive Director underscored that it is through collective engagement that IOIG 2019, which promotes excellence, friendship and respect, will be a success. SBM is an unwavering partner in this endeavour and the sponsorship agreement aims at offering the best possible conditions to national teams of participating countries, Mr Sauzier emphasised.

For his part, the SBM Group CEO stressed that the SBM is honoured to be the platinum sponsor of the 10th edition of the IOIG, which will unite people of the Indian Ocean region. The agreement signed results from SBM’s efforts, determination and commitment to be part of the Mauritian national team at the Games, he added.

Press Conference

A press conference by Minister Toussaint to present several activities under the theme ‘Mo Kartie, Mo Fami, Mo Fierte’ was also held following the sponsorship agreement signing ceremony.

The activities are being organised by the Youth Department of the Ministry, in collaboration with the Municipal Council of Curepipe, the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund and the Plaines Wilhems Regional Youth Council.

The proposed community activities, which include Domino, Children Race, Dance Race, Walking Football, Pétanque and a culinary competition, will be held every Sunday as from 02 September 2018 to 09 December 2018 in 34 sub-regions of Curepipe.

They aim at training young people in volunteering activities and promoting a volunteering culture among them; mobilising community resources for youth and community development; providing a platform where various communities meet and indulge in social and healthy activities; and providing opportunities for young people to participate in inter-regional activities.

Trained volunteers will then be able to help and participate in future activities organised in their region as well as in activities organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
