Angata Barikoi: Security has been beefed up at the Angata Barikoi area in Trans Mara South Sub County following on-and-off clashes between two warring communities who live at the border of Narok and Migori counties. Speaking when he toured the area, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan said four people were killed, ten injured, and several acres of maize plantations destroyed in recent clashes. He linked the clashes to competition over farming land and grazing areas, as the two communities are both livestock and crop farmers.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Hassan announced continuous police patrols to ensure peace in the region, and mentioned plans for meetings with counterparts from the Nyanza region to address the conflict permanently. He emphasized legal action against those carrying dangerous weapons such as spears, arrows, and bows, and reassured residents of sufficient security personnel for their protection. Dr. Hassan also warned public servants against inciting conflict between com
munities, indicating close monitoring of such activities.
Accompanied by the Rift Valley security team and County security team led by County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, Dr. Hassan’s visit highlighted the community’s desire for peaceful dialogue. Residents urged for meetings to unite the long-feuding communities. Angata Barikoi Member of County Assembly Gabriel Mibei requested Dr. Hassan to mediate with his Nyanza counterpart to address the persistent issue.
The meeting follows earlier peace efforts by Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu and Commissioner Lotiatia to restore peace in the volatile region. A General Service Unit (GSU) camp was previously established to mitigate the sporadic clashes.
