Some 34 African Leaders to Attend AU Summit in Addis Ababa


Some 34 African heads of state and government are expected to attend the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) that will be held in Addis Ababa from February 14 to 18, 2024, Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu and Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit will also attend the summit.

Briefing the media, Spokesperson of the ministry Ambassador Meles Alem said Ethiopia has made intensive preparations to warmly welcome and successfully host the summit.

He elaborated that some 34 leaders from African countries are expected to participate at the summit. Furthermore, ambassador Meles stated that Ethiopia has identified two discussion topics for the summit. “Harnessing Digitalization for transformation” and “Africa food self-sufficient Climate Smart Solutions and Collective Actions for System Transforma
tion’ are the two agenda topics prepared by Ethiopia for the summit.

Ethiopia will also actively carryout activities aimed at strengthening bilateral and multilateral diplomacy with the leaders of various countries on the margins of the summit, he added.

The 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive will be held from February 14th to 15th and the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government will be held from February 17th to 18th respectively.

The theme of this year’s AU summit is ‘Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa. ‘
