As the Golden Jubilee of Mauritius’s independence gets under way, we have to further strengthen the macroeconomic fundamentals of the country, both at the infrastructural and social level. We should join forces in this great march towards its modernisation and promote a fair and equitable society to better face the upcoming challenges.
The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth made this statement yesterday in Port Louis at the official launching of activities on the theme, lame dans lame to mark the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius. The Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport, Mr Nandcoomar Bodha, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, and other eminent personalities, were also present.
On the same occasion, the Prime Minister launched a Mobile App, NouMoris, so that citizens can access the complete calendar of all national events and activities for the National Day celebrations directly on their smartphones. He invited the population to participate with great fervor in this landmark event. According to him, the golden jubilee is a day of pride for the nation and brings together all citizens to celebrate the Independence Day in all its diversity.
The day, he added, also marks the sacrifices of our ancestors who have laid the very foundation of the country’s economic development. On this score, Prime Minister Jugnauth appealed to the nation to pay a special homage to our forebears and called for a concerted effort from each and every one to contribute in sustaining the economic growth of the country while at the same time maintaining understanding, respect and national unity.
For his part, Minister Roopun highlighted that the country has emerged from an underdeveloped country to a developing one and that this transformation has been possible with great synergy at all levels cemented by peace, harmony and unity that have prevailed in the country for the past 50 years.
He also spoke on the new version of the song lame dans lame which has been re-worked with the participation of some 25 local artists.A live performance of the song is scheduled on 12 March at Champ de Mars, he added.
On the other hand, Minister Bodha, emphasised that we should pay tribute to all those individuals who had an exceptional vision towards the progress of the country. Today, we have come a long way and the past 50 years has been a journey of hard work, sacrifices and determination, he underlined. He invited the nation for greater participation in the various activities to mark the 50th Independence Day celebrations so as to create a sense of belonging while at the same consolidating the spirit of patriotism, unity and solidarity.
