Ouagadougou: The Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Pingdwende Gilbert Ouedraogo, visited the Thomas Sankara Memorial site on the afternoon of Friday, September 19, 2025. Welcomed by the team in charge of the Isidore Noel Thomas Sankara Memorial Infrastructure Construction Project (PCIM-INTS), the Minister was able to interact with all the stakeholders involved in the construction and development of this important place of remembrance.
According to Burkina Information Agency, after a working session, the Minister toured several existing infrastructures, including the Mausoleum of Captain Thomas Sankara and his twelve companions, as well as other developments. In his speech, the Minister congratulated the stakeholders for the work accomplished since the project’s launch. He noted the site has welcomed over 40,000 visitors since May 17, and emphasized the support from Burkinabe and friends of Burkina Faso. He acknowledged existing challenges but encouraged continued progress.
The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to closely monitoring the work’s progress and supporting initiatives to elevate the memorial to a national and international showcase. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the ministry and the International Thomas Sankara Memorial Committee (CIMTS), stating that the project’s success relies on the synergy of actions.
Etienne Lompo, Coordinator of PCIM-INTS, recalled achievements since the memorial’s implementation on January 1, 2024, which focus on infrastructure creation and promoting Sankara’s ideals and political legacy. Notable advances include the completion and inauguration of the mausoleum, development of the memorial courtyard, construction of a ticket office, rehabilitation of the National Council of the Revolution office, and creation of murals illustrating the Revolution’s ideals.
Through this visit, Minister Pingdwende Gilbert Ouedraogo reaffirms the Government’s determination to support this emblematic project.
