The United Councils and Cities of Cameroon has denounced an attack on the Mayor of Eseka by the Police on Thursday October 10, 2024.
The Mayor, Sylvain Tjock had opposed the arnachical construction of a makeshift post by the Police Commissioner of the area, reminding him that such plans must be approved by the Council.
The Commissioner threatened to shoot him, saying in a video that wenty viral on social media, ‘I will shoot you, bring my gun’ but the Mayor remained defiant, reminding the secuirty offiver that he is the commander of the town and has the full authority to grant permits for such constructions.
While the Mayor was personally removing the planks from the floor, he wwas severely wounded in an altercation orchestarted by the Police chief in the area.
Eseka is located in the Nyong and Nkele divsion, Centre region.
Mayors are elected in Cameroon and are supposed to enjoy full power over granting permits to avoid urban disorder but the Police Commissioner questioned the authrity of the Mayor, sa
ying it was a nobody position.
The UCCC says it is ready to support the Mayor in any legal procedures he may want to take against the Police boss.
