Ethiopia to Host Second Climate Change Week Ahead of 2nd African Climate Summit

Addis ababa: Ethiopia is set to host the second Climate Week of 2025 (CW2) from September 1 to September 6, 2025, in Addis Ababa, under the theme “Dialogues for Ambition and Implementation.” Following this, the second Africa Climate Summit will be held from September 8 to September 10, 2025. These back-to-back events are expected to significantly influence both global and African climate action directions.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, these events present a vital opportunity to advance Africa’s climate agenda internationally, ensuring that the continent’s priorities are acknowledged in the global climate discussions and efforts to mobilize climate finance. In preparation, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Planning and Development, in partnership with the Government Communication Service and the Global Green Growth Institute, conducted a training session in Bishoftu to raise awareness about the summit among journalists.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is organizing the global Climate Week, which will take place at the Addis Ababa International Convention Centre. Mensur Desse, Lead Executive Officer for Environment and Climate Change Agreements and Strategic Partnerships at the Ministry of Planning and Development, stated that around 1,500 delegates are expected to participate. Mensur emphasized a shift in narrative, focusing on Africa’s practical and innovative solutions to climate change rather than portraying African nations as mere victims.

Mensur highlighted initiatives like Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which has seen billions of seedlings planted independently, contributing to climate change mitigation, food security, and national development. He stressed that Climate Week would be a platform to transform countries’ visions and political commitments into concrete actions, offering policy ideas for the upcoming Africa Climate Summit and shaping a common agenda for the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in Brazil.

Senior representatives from African nations, policymakers, organizations, and various stakeholders will engage in high-level consultations, discussions, exhibitions, and networking opportunities throughout the week. This event, part of the bi-annual Climate Change Week series organized by the United Nations, aims to transform climate commitments into tangible actions and set agendas for future events. The first Climate Week of 2025 took place in Panama in May 2025.
