Ethiopia’s Dignified Refugee Approach Promotes Regional Peace and Integration

Addis Ababa: The dignified approach of Ethiopia towards hosting a large number of refugees is poised to yield substantial diplomatic advantages and foster regional peace and integration, according to Refugees and Returnees Service Director-General Teyba Hassen. In an exclusive interview, she highlighted Ethiopia’s hosting of approximately 1.2 million refugees, positioning the country as the second-largest host in Africa and seventh globally.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the refugees predominantly hail from neighboring countries with strong linguistic and cultural ties to the local Ethiopian communities. Director-General Hassen emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to international laws and standards in its exemplary approach to refugee hosting.

Refugees in Ethiopia often integrate closely with local communities, accessing opportunities such as employment and the freedom to reside outside camps. Their conditions are notably better compared to many other host countries, earning Ethiopia international recognition for its progressive refugee support.

The government is dedicated to hosting refugees with dignity and care, supported by Ethiopia’s traditions of hospitality and generosity. This approach not only enhances Ethiopia’s diplomatic stature but also promotes its image when refugees return to their home countries.

Furthermore, Ethiopia’s efforts in hosting refugees strengthen people-to-people ties and promote regional peace and economic integration. Director-General Hassen stressed that Ethiopia’s role as a prominent regional nation involves supporting neighboring countries and welcoming asylum seekers, in alignment with international laws and standards, while actively seeking sustainable solutions.
