Ethiopians across the country begun planting 500 million seedlings in a single day as part of the second round of national green legacy initiative.
Ethiopians from all walks of life including government officials, public servants and members of the international community based in Addis Ababa are participating in today’s tree planting activities.
Today’s planting program aims at breaking the 350 million seedlings planted record that was registered in 2019 in a single day.
This year’s seedlings planting intends to surpass the previous record by 150 million.
Ethiopia has successfully carried out the first round of Green Legacy Initiative by planting 25 billion of seedlings over the last four years with an effort to combat climate change, deforestation and ensure food security.
In the second phase, Ethiopia has planned to plant another 25 billion seedlings.
Today's planting of 500 million seedlings in a single day is part of the second round of the initiative.
The Green Legacy is about protecting, respecting and prospering Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Sunday.
He also stated that the initiative is about changing the course of history and doing it for the next generation.
