A reception to mark the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, was hosted by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Mauritius, Mr Liying Zhu, yesterday, at the Trianon Convention Centre in Quatre-Bornes. The event was graced by the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo, members of the diplomatic corps and other eminent personalities. Speaking on the occasion, the Chinese Ambassador highlighted that the presence of the President along with the Prime Minister is a testimony of the importance that Mauritius attributes to the relationship with China. He also seized the opportunity to chart on the progress made by the People’s Republic of China since its founding in 1949 while elaborating on the lessons that the country has drawn from its history, adapting to realities and responding to aspirations. Emphasising on consolidating bilat eral relations, Mr Zhu spoke of the recently organised Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing, stressing the modernisation process that would benefit both China and Africa. To this end, he mentioned that China will provide a financial support of some 360 billion yuan in the form of credit and investment over the next three years to Africa. This, he added, will also enable the creation of more than one million job in Africa. As regards further enhancing the cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Mauritius, Ambassador Zhu indicated that the central banks of both countries have signed the Currency Swap Agreement. He also underlined that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Mauritius has increased the flow of trade between both countries, growing by 3.4% last year and 10% for the first half of this year. The FTA, he observed, will reinforce the role of Mauritius with regard to trade, investment, finance and tourism flow between Africa and China. Re ferring to the assistance provided to the youth, the Ambassador pointed out that last year more than 500 Mauritian youngsters have benefitted from training and nearly 400 youngsters have received training during the last eight months. He also spoke of the upcoming participation of Mauritius at the 7th Edition of the International Import Exhibition in Shanghai in two months.
