Addis Ababa: The ‘Made in Ethiopia 2025’ Expo, officially inaugurated today by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, will take place over the next five days and features 288 local producers who are showcasing their products.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, this marks the third year of the ‘Made in Ethiopia’ movement, which has already delivered promising outcomes. The Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) emphasized the encouraging results of the movement, highlighting significant economic growth in the sector. Annual growth increased from 4.8% in the 2014 Ethiopian calendar fiscal year to 8.4% in 2016, with projections suggesting it will reach 12% in the current fiscal year (2017).

The utilization of production capacity has also seen a rise, reaching 61.2% in the first nine months of the 2017 Ethiopian calendar fiscal year. In terms of financial growth, revenues jumped from $2.1 billion in 2014 to $3.1 billion in the first nine months of 2017. Manufacturing energy consumption also increased, from 3.88 billion kilowatt-hours in 2015 to 4.67 billion in 2016.

Furthermore, the National Accounts of the Ministry of Planning and Development reported a significant rise in Ethiopia’s manufacturing value added, which grew from approximately $5.3 billion in the 2014 fiscal year to $9.25 billion in 2016. This reflects the real output growth mentioned above.

Looking towards the future, the focus will be on developing agricultural processing machinery to expand agro-processing, advancing free energy generation technologies to support rural irrigation and domestic energy supply, and fostering innovation to bring new products to market.
