Ethiopia’s Cultural Wealth, Tourism Potential Draws Praise from American Journalist

Addis Ababa: Mychal Sargent, a journalist and Multimedia Manager at the U.S.-based emergency response company, Deployed Logix, has praised Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. In his recent trip to Addis Ababa, he expressed his admiration about the hospitality of the people and diversified culture.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Sargent passionately spoke about his experience, describing Ethiopia as a nation full of rich culture, warm hospitality, and uplifting encounters. He challenged what he called the ‘unfavorable’ and ‘unjust’ portrayals often presented by Western media, remarking, ‘This place is beautiful,’ and emphasizing the country’s deep traditions and dynamic daily life.

Sargent urged more people to visit Ethiopia to experience its true spirit, which he believes is not accurately reflected globally. He argued that a significant expansion of the country’s tourism sector could dramatically change international perceptions. He attributed the current lack of awareness to limited and often negative coverage by Western media, which overlooks Ethiopia’s cultural landscape and energetic atmosphere.

Addis Ababa, in particular, left a lasting impression on Sargent. He described the capital as ‘a truly great city with plenty to do,’ and suggested that promoting its vibrant nightlife and downtown attractions could help convey the joy and charm of Ethiopian life.

Before his visit, Sargent admitted to misconceptions, such as the belief that Ethiopians do not commonly speak English or French. However, these concerns quickly vanished as he found English widely spoken upon his arrival at Bole International Airport and in interactions throughout the city. He also encountered several other languages, highlighting the city’s linguistic accessibility.

The hospitality was a highlight of his visit. ‘The hospitality has been fantastic,’ he noted, emphasizing the open arms and kindness he encountered. Minor communication issues were far outweighed by the warmth and friendliness he experienced.

Sargent was also pleasantly surprised by the climate. ‘It’s not as hot as I expected. The weather is actually really beautiful,’ he said, noting his surprise given Ethiopia’s location near the equator.

Wrapping up his reflections, Sargent expressed eagerness to return, stating, ‘I would visit Ethiopia again in a heartbeat. I’d love to bring my wife and explore more of this beautiful country.’ He encouraged Ethiopians to “keep moving forward,” reaffirming his admiration: ‘This is a beautiful nation, and more people should come and experience it.’
