Ethiopian Red Cross Society Urged to Build Capacity to Achieve Mission

Addis ababa: President Taye Astke Selassie emphasized the need for the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) to enhance its capacity to effectively prevent and alleviate human suffering through timely humanitarian and development initiatives. The remarks were made during the 90th Anniversary of the ERCS at the Addis International Convention Center.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, President Taye highlighted the Society’s role as a symbol of compassion and generosity, commending it for its humanitarian efforts over the years. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by its members in confronting challenges to Ethiopia’s sovereignty. With declining international support, the President stressed the importance of building sustainable capacity for independent humanitarian work.

ERCS President Abera Tola noted the government’s significant support in boosting the Society’s capacity. He outlined a plan to increase the Society’s membership to 20 million over the next decade, aiming for self-sustenance by 2035 and becoming a leader in African humanitarian assistance.

Simone Casabianca-Aeschlimann, Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Delegation for Ethiopia, praised ERCS’s resilience and achievements over nine decades. She reaffirmed the longstanding cooperation between ICRC and ERCS, dating back to 1935, and commended the dedication of ERCS leaders, staff, and volunteers.

The anniversary event was attended by former ERCS patrons, President Mulatu Teshome and President Sahle-Work Zewdie, alongside senior government officials and ambassadors.
