Kiambu County Braces for Below-Average Rains in October-December Season.

The County Meteorological Services have predicted that the season, which will commence between the 3rd and 4th week of October 2024, will feature poor to fair rainfall distribution.

According to Kenya News Agency, County Director for Meteorological Services, Magdalene Gateri, has indicated that most regions within Kiambu will be affected, with Lari, Limuru, and Kikuyu expected to receive the least rainfall, ranging from 0-250mm. Other areas including Juja, Ruiru, Kiambu, Kabete, Githunguri, Gatundu North and South, and Thika Town are projected to receive average to below-average rainfall between 250-400mm. Gateri noted that the season may be characterized by occasional storms and prolonged dry spells.

Reflecting on the previous March-April-May (MAM) 2024 season, Gateri stated that the rainfall matched predictions with a timely start and good distribution acro
ss several parts of the county. While the MAM season had positive impacts on agriculture, food security, and livestock, it also led to challenges in disaster management due to floods and landslides.

Gateri emphasized the need for various sectors to prepare for the potential impacts of the October-November-December (OND) season. She advised the agriculture and livestock sectors to employ conservation agricultural methods, early planting, and water conservation techniques, such as drip irrigation. Additionally, water management sectors should promote soil conservation and enhance water harvesting methods.

Furthermore, the energy and disaster management sectors are urged to take preventive measures such as trimming trees near power lines and temporarily closing activities near water sources. The health sector is also advised to prepare for increased waterborne diseases and malaria cases by stocking up on necessary medications and implementing preventative measures for the public.

The short rains are expected
to conclude by mid-December 2024, with some occasional rains anticipated towards the end of the month.
