MaMa Doing Good Launches Program To Train Women In Tree Nursery Management

Education and skills were highlighted as crucial factors in unlocking the full potential of every individual, leading to the launch of a significant 3-day training program by MaMa Doing Good, a nonprofit organization based in Nairobi.

The program, meant for members of the Joyful Women Organization in Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, and Trans Nzoia counties, focuses on imparting essential skills for tree nursery establishment and maintenance and is a collaborative effort with the Kenya Forest Service.

Agnes Jerotich, a representative from MaMa Doing Good, emphasized the importance of training in empowering women toward financial freedom.

‘Teaching them how to get money is better than just giving handouts, which may diminish,’ she said.

She added that the training initiative is poised to equip Joyful Women Organization members with the necessary knowledge to initiate and expand their businesses, thereby earning income and enhancing their lives and communities.

Participants will also learn how to care for di
fferent types of trees, thanks to the guidance provided by the Kenya Forest Service.

This is in support of the government’s goal to increase tree cover by 30%, the training therefore aims to empower women to actively contribute to environmental conservation.

Laban Gitiba, the Cheptongei Forest Station Manager, stressed the significance of conserving the environment for the benefit of the entire community.

Gitiba added, ‘By training the Joyful Women group on how to establish a nursery, they will in turn teach others, thus end up contributing to enhancing the forest cover.’

Abigael Biwott from the Joyful Women group lauded the initiative, terming it a breakthrough for their community.

She noted that the training not only promises economic empowerment, but also positions the group as key contributors to environmental sustainability, aligning with broader national goals.
