Kieni Member of Parliament Njoroge Wainana has reassured his constituents of their childrens’ safety against contracting waterborne diseases ahead of the school re-opening.
Wainana who has mobilized exhausters to drain flooded school pit latrines in his Constituency, said that he is collaborating with the Ministry of Education at the county to ensure that they restore schools to their habitable status before the learners resume on Monday.
‘We want to ensure that no child in Kieni Constituency fails to report because of flooded classrooms or a flooded toilet,’ Wainaina said.
On Wednesday President William Ruto, while announcing the new school reopening dates, also instructed MPs to use the NG-CDF for repairs of classrooms and other learning facilities.
In Nyeri, an assessment report by the Ministry of Education on the impact of the floods showed that more than 60 schools in the county had flooded toilets. Kieni Constituency recorded the highest number where 40 schools had flooded pit latrines.

sessment, the floods affected two secondary schools and five primary schools in Nyeri South while Mukurwe-ini recorded flooding in seven secondary schools.
Mathira, Tetu and Nyeri were least affected with each of the sub-counties recording less than five cases of flooded toilets and classrooms.Wainana said they had also roped in parents to help drain water from some of the flooded classrooms.
‘The classrooms were not badly affected. We have committed ourselves to work throughout this weekend, with our parents helping us to drain the flooded classrooms while we work on the sanitation because we don’t want our children to contract infections associated with exposure to sewage,’ said Wainaina.
