Prime Minister Jugnauth attends 100th birthday celebrations of Mrs Tannajee

Mrs Gangabye Tannajee born Sonea, also known as Ajee Gangabye, celebrated her 100th birthday, yesterday at the Dagotière Multipurpose Complex, surrounded by family members and friends. The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, was present for the centenarian celebrations.

The Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin; the Chairperson of the District Council of Moka, Mr Sudhirchandra Mahesh Kumar Soonarane; and the Chairperson of the Senior Citizens Council, Mr Hanslall Seebaruth, were also present.

An official ceremony was thus organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity to honour the new centenarian. On this occasion, she received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 26,203; another one to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund; a microwave oven; a bouquet; a centenarian medal; a gift in kind from the Senior Citizens Council; a Special Telephone Service from Mauritius Telecom; and a
certificate.

In his address, Prime Minister Jugnauth conveyed his warmest wishes to Mrs Tannajee while lauding her family for the support and care they bestow upon the centenarian. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment in providing robust support to the elderly in a bid to ensure that they enjoy the best possible standard of living. On this score, he pointed out that the authorities are providing a number of facilities and healthcare services for the benefit of the elderly.

He also highlighted the contributions of the elderly in the society who, he acknowledged, have played pivotal roles in securing our lives. He, moreover, stressed the crucial role of children in offering continuous aid and support in the elderly’s lives.

Life History of Mrs Tannajee

Mrs Tannajee was born on 28 October 1924 at Sans Souci. Her parents were labourers. The centenarian had two brothers and two sisters. All of them have passed away. She never went to school and worked as a labourer in vegetable fields and tea cultivations. Sh
e religiously married Mr Goind Tannajee, a tailor, in 1949 followed by civil marriage on 14 November 1961. He passed away on 03 July 1991.

The couple was blessed with six children, one son and five daughters. The son and one daughter have passed away. The centenarian has 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs Tannajee likes to eat ‘Bouillon Brede’, ‘Chatini pomme d’amour’ and ‘Bersan’ (a typical Marathi dish). Her hobby is sewing clothes for herself and her children.

As regards her health conditions, the centenarian suffers from high blood pressure and cannot walk by herself.

Mrs Tannajee attributes her long life to the good care provided by her family members.
