Youth Groups Receive Beehives

Homabay County government has distributed bee hives to four youth groups in Rachuonyo South Sub County to help increase their capacity in honey production.

This time round, the four groups received 24 four bee hives to add to last year’s 76 given to the same groups.

Nyagunde and Imani youth groups got 7 beehives each while Kanyowang and Wifoma received 5 bee hives each.

Speaking during the distribution of the beehives, Rachuonyo South Sub County Livestock Production Officer Peter Odhiambo Omollo, urged the youth to diversify their agricultural activities to increase their income. ‘Use the beehives to increase your production toward food security,’ he said.

Omollo said that in July this year, they trained the youth on beekeeping, poultry farming, and parasites, and disease control among other animal poultry farming aspects.

During the distribution of the beehives in an event held at the Livestock Office ground in Kosele, the Livestock Officer called on other youth groups and individuals engaged in beekee
ping to get the required training and assistance necessary to improve their production for better economic prospects.

He also asked those who have received support to take care of the beehives as trained adding, ‘In case of any challenge, just visit our office for help’.

He promised the beneficiaries that officials from the Livestock Department would be moving around to check on the progress of their farming activities and offer any support services they may need saying the government is committed to ensuring that the youth are engaged in productive economic activities to transform their lives.
